Introducing

MeWelcome to Ogilvie Racing the online outlet for myself, Josh Ogilvie. I am a Mechanical Engineer currently working in Formula One, and since I was young I’ve had a passion for race cars.

 

Starting in Stockcars when I was 14 I cut my teeth building and driving a bright orange 998cc Rover Mini. I completed a vast amount of fabrication and preparation work, and finished two successful seasons with numerous wins under my belt; it was a rare if I wasn’t dicing with the top of the pack. During this time I realised that even a small amount of knowledge about vehicle setup, tyres and engines went a long way to giving you an edge over the competition. This fuelled my quest for knowledge and understanding, and I learnt all I could from my father Rod Ogilvie who is an experienced car builder and engineer in his own right.

Unsurprisingly I went on to study engineering at the University of Southampton, with the objective of learning the tools and techniques required to build race cars. Perhaps the most important part of my studies was my year in industry where I worked in the Vehicle Dynamics department of a championship winning F1 team. It was here that the real learning began, working alongside experienced engineers and top drivers.

To make sure I stayed sane during my studies I built a Lotus 7 replica in what little spare time I had (the Locost). To describe the entire process in a few lines of text would do it little justice. I undertook a full from-scratch vehicle build, including custom uprights, chassis and suspension.

Currently I drive the Locost in AutoSolo/Sprint events back at home and I derive a lot of my passion from this little red car.

As time goes on I’ll be producing articles and videos on the following subjects, hopefully sharing some of the interesting and useful things I’ve learnt along the way.

    Josh, I’m interested in a comment you posted a few years ago on the TeamSwift forums about your Locost build. You mentioned using the Swift flywheel with a Samurai clutch and pressure plate, is that right? Seems like a lot of people either use a Samurai flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate or a Swift flywheel and pressure plate but the clutch disk from a Samurai.

    Any clarifcation you can give would be a huge help for my own build.

    Hi Sam,

    Sorry for the late reply, I get a lot of Spam and it took me a while to filter down to you.

    I used the Swift flywheel, which is much lighter than the Samurai item, with the Samurai pressure plate and clutch. I had to shim the Samurai pressure plate out because the Sami’ flywheel has a relief which the Swift flywheel does not.

    The 4×4 guys have some super heavy duty clutches available in the states. I eventually went for a hybrid ceramic/organic type, as I burn’t up my standard clutch.

    What are you building? I’d be interested in knowing about it.

    No problem! There’s a lot of different information flying around out there and the 4×4 guys haven’t been the most reliable source. You’re the first person I’ve come across who’s tried that flywheel/clutch/pressure plate combination.

    I’m in the process of stuffing a GTI engine into my 1969 Opel GT project car. It’s about a 200lb weight savings over the stock drivetrain plus a 30% increase in power. Sticking with the stock ECU for now, I’ll probably switch to megasquirt after I get the car built and I start looking at engine modifcations.

    Hi Sam,

    That sounds like a great project. If I ever wanted another toy car I’d definitely consider a G13B engine again, their pretty awesome on power/weight as you say and sound fantastic; I’ll have to upload some of my onboard videos soon.

    If you need any standard injection parts I have a stack of them on the shelf from my spare engines; just drop me a message.
